About MeBoudin was born at Honfleur, the son of a retired sea-captain. With the sea in his blood and a port for a home, he became an expert of his chosen marine subjects, scenes of the harbours and estuaries of his native Normandy coast. Barbizon artists such as Courbet saw and admired the freedom of the young artist's brushwork and Corot was to call Boudin, "The Monarch of the sky." In Le Havre, where Boudin spent most of his life, he also met the young Claude Monet and encouraged him to paint in the open air. Boudin was amongst the first to complete canvasses 'en plein air' and is often considered to be a forerunner of Impressionism. 'Leaving Port' is a fairly early work and shows Boudin's concerns in recording the conditions of light and atmosphere on a particular day at port.
