About MeBeing an illegitimate child of a working maid in Aberdeen, Robert Brough was brought up by his uncle's family in the countryside. He tended to shy away from classical works, but amongst his early work was one classical subject, 'Such Burial then the Illustrious Hector Found.' Brough studyied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, where such subjects were often set for the students but given that this work is inscribed "Etude pour Andromeda" it seems more likely that he executed this sketch whilst studying in Paris.

Brough had little knowledge of, let alone interest in, this classical subject and he actually confused Andromache, Hector's wife, for Andromeda, the daughter of the king of Ethiopia and later abandoned such subjects in favour of portraits and modern landscape paintings.

More About Me

Brough was best known as a portrait artist and political cartoonist, usually shying away from classical images like this one, which was probably from his time spent studying in Paris.
