About MeAs he was illegitimate, Robert Brough grew up in Aberdeen with the family of his uncle. Later on in life he went to study art at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and later in Paris, where he studied one summer with fellow Scots artist Samuel J. Peploe. There he came under the influence of the Impressionists, as is very apparent in this pastel study. Brough travelled to Brittany and Morocco and in both places used pastels to capture quickly the scenes that he saw. The village of Cults is situated just a few miles to the west of Aberdeen.

Robert Brough died aged 33 from severe burns sustained in a train crash near Sheffield.
