About MeThe sitter John Callcott Horsley, who was the brother-in-law of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is perhaps best known for the fact that he designed the Worlds first commercial Christmas card for his friend Henry Cole, founder of the Victoria & Albert Museum. One thousand copies were published by Joseph Cundall, the mid 19th century children’s and illustrations publisher, and sold at Felix Summerly’s Home Treasury Office in Old Bond Street, England for one shilling each in 1843.

He was a friend of Alexander Macdonald who commissioned this painting and two other artists' portraits from Horsley as well as a subject painting, 'The Pet of the Common', all of which were also bequeathed to Aberdeen Art Gallery.
