About MeGwen John followed her younger brother Augustus to London to study at the Slade School of Art. She settled in France where she led a very unconventional life and became increasingly solitary and reclusive. Her self-absorption and introspection are reflected in the very intense and individual nature of her work.

Although this appears to be a straight-forward portrait drawing done from life, it is in fact one of a whole series of copies she made of a photograph of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Thérèse died in 1897 but the drawing dates from the year of her canonisation, 1929.
