One of Belgium’s most important marine painters, as a youth Clays had signed on as a ship-boy and spent a number of years at sea - he once told White that he consequently knew the Scottish coastline well, "from Berwick to Sumburgh Head". In 1856 he, and his family, moved to Brussels and it was from this point that he specialized in scenes along the Scheldt.
