The town of Paisley where so many shawls were produced in the 19th century gave its name to the pattern of distinctive curled pinecone motifs.

Large shawls like this one were the height of fashion when wide crinoline skirts were in vogue. They were usually worn draped loosely over a lady's shoulders.
