About MeOne of the most interesting finds from north east Scotland in recent years was a groat of James II found in a garden near Stonehaven , fifteen miles south of Aberdeen, in 1988.The groat is a scarce type from James's Second Coinage, the production of which commenced in 1451. This issue of groat was valued at 12 pence in Scots money as opposed to the six pence of First Coinage types and was slightly heavier.
The second coinage groat of James II can be distinguished from earlier issues by the innovative reverse design in which crowns alternate with pellets in the angles of the cross (First Coinage types had fleurs-de-lis).
