About MeIllustrated is the head (obverse) of a silver penny from Berwick on which little detail is visible save part of the King's crown and part of his sceptre. When David I of Scotland captured Carlisle in 1136 he took over the mint already existing in that city to produce the very first Scottish coins. Other mints soon followed at Berwick, Roxburgh, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and possibly Perth. David's coins were merely copying the style of those of the comtemporary English King, Stephen which were of equally poor workmanship.
