In 1810 a new joint-stock bank was founded in Edinburgh. This was the Commercial Bank of Scotland, the first company large enough to pose a real threat to the two Scottish public banks, the Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The Commercial Bank's network of branches was the largest in Scotland. In 1844 it took over the Arbroath Banking Company. In 1959 the Commercial Bank amalgamated with the National Bank of Scotland.
