About MeWilkie's paintings often had a slow gestation over a period of years, partly due to the pressure of his workload. This fairly highly resolved sketch is dated 1829, several years before the finished oil painting (also Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums) was exhibited. This is a study in light and shade and Wilkie has not concerned himself with the likeness but has concentrated upon the composition, from which he departed little when he came to paint the finished picture.
