About MeThis "matrix" of "source and destination" was constructed to enable engineer-operator to manipulate input-output from and to different sources. There were only 4 such monitoring matrices built: Aberdeen, Plymouth, Newcastle and Wales. Left of the source destination matrix is the monitoring matrix, followed by a jack field/telephone lines and at extreme left standard indicators for sound levels. The installation of the desk was overseen (and partially designed by) Mr Basil Skinner. Mr Skinner joined the BBC in 1946 and after working in various parts of Britain returned to Aberdeen to install the desk. Mr Skinner was senior maintainence engineer at Beechgrove, retired in 1980 but returned 1986 to help in the transition during installation of new control equipment. The desk was phased out 1987, replaced by more powerful flexible system. Prior to phasing out engineers were responsible for operating the system, now largely maintenance role. Nine to ten engineers were employed in the 1960s-70s.
