About MeThe unusual setting of the three crosses situated in three ravines, instead of on Calvary, was inspired by the mountainous region of Macedonia which Spencer experienced during his military service in the First World War. The painting, executed on various sheets of paper, is a study for a much larger composition which was never executed. Since the picture was based on Spencer's wartime experiences, it may have been intended as a war memorial.
More About Me
Some say that the picture is a memorial for those killed in WW1. Is this why the crosses are in trenches rather than on a hill? And who is the person with the horse?
