About MeJames Stark was a pupil of John Crome, a major artist of the Norwich School of painters. Like Crome, he admired the 17th century Dutch artist Hobbema who painted quiet landscapes, usually with streams and watermills. Hobemma's work was popular with British collectors and so he exerted a great influence on English landscape painting. This little wooded landscape gives a delightful insight into an aspect of English rural life. The horse waits patiently on the tow-path as the boatmen navigate the canal lock.
