About MeAllan Ramsay was the son of the Scottish poet of the same name. He associated with the great writers, connoisseurs and thinkers of the day. Dr Johnson and Boswell were among his friends, as were Rousseau and David Hume (both of whom he painted). He also corresponded with Voltaire.

Like his contemporary William Hogarth, Ramsay painted striking and intimate portraits. The sitter, Margaret Wight, was the wife of Provost John Duncan of Mosstown.
