About MeMr Pirie's last job was on the Cowdray estate, this was 1939. the weather was very bad heavy rain; he was working outside and contracted pneumonia. He lay ill for 2 years and died aged 51 in1941. His wife and the union contended that far from it being pneumonia which killed him it was a dust related illness from working with granite. However, to pursue the claim would have apparently required finacnial resources. The claim was not pursued. The employer, John FyfeLtd. and the insurers did not pay out any compensation although it seems that the Cowdray estate payed the widow thirty shillings a sum not calculated to undermine its wealth. Mr Pirie carved the gryphons which stand at the driveway to the Dunecht estate.
