About MeAnthony Devas studied at the Slade School of Art in London, where he met his future wife the artist and writer Nicolette Devas. He was best known for portrait commissions. He painted a portrait of the Queen and portraits of many well-known and affluent people. Like Sargent, he was a very fashionable painter. His ability to bring a breadth and freedom of treatment to portraiture is particularly noted. His portraits carried conviction not only as good physical likeness but also understanding and sympathising with the characters of the sitters. Although associated with the Euston Road Group, he was never really interested in the importance of painting traditional subjects in a realist manner.

In this portrait, Devas portrays his artistic skills in two areas for which he was famous for: still life and portraiture. He shows the model in a domestic setting. He uses soft colour and outline to emphasise his model's slenderness and elegance. He pays a particular attention in the depiction of flowers in the foreground of this painting. He was a passionate and prolific painter of flowers, and a keen gardener who won the annual Chelsea 'best window boxes' competition on a number of occasions.
