The sawn side clearly shows the marks of having been cut by straight-cut saw using heavy shot, with deep groves in the stone. This side also have patches of red staining from the use of iron shot. The other large surface is polished.
The deeper the saw marks, the more work is required in the final polishing. At one time it was thought that the rust stains in stone were due to minerals in the granite. Once it was recognised as a result of using iron shot, greater care was taken.
