About MeLewis Beggs enlisted in the 91st infantry regiment on 25th November 1808, aged 18. He was discharged on medical grounds on 14th October, 1837. Prior to his discharge he had been involved in recruiting duties for his regiment in Scotland, and for the last seven years of his engagement had held the rank of Sergeant. The medal forms a pair with the Waterloo Medal (ABDMS19102).

The LS &GCM, sometimes disparagingly refered to as being awarded for 'eighteen years of undetected crime', was instituted by William IV in 1830. It has a plain crimson ribbon but examples issued from World War I had the ribbon edged in white to avoid confusion with the Victoria Cross.

This medal is accompanied by the recipient's original certificate of discharge and photocopies of other documents relating to his army service.
