The LS &GCM, sometimes disparagingly refered to as being awarded for 'eighteen years of undetected crime', was instituted by William IV in 1830. It has a plain crimson ribbon but examples issued from World War I had the ribbon edged in white to avoid confusion with the Victoria Cross.
This medal is accompanied by the recipient's original certificate of discharge and photocopies of other documents relating to his army service.
