About MeSilver tokens from Scotland are rare; this is one of two types of silver shilling from Dundee designed by local numismatist, James Wright, Junior. On the obverse of the token shown here is an illustration of a market cross which, the legend tells us, was 'taken down in 1777'. James Wright Junior (1768-1798) holds a special place in Scottish numismatics. He realised the artistic possibilities of tokens and urged that their designs be improved. Leading the way himself he designed a number of tokens both on his own behalf and that of various merchants and traders, mostly of Dundee.
