About MeEdward Ardizzone was born in Haiphong, Vietnam and moved to England at the age of eight. He trained at evening classes in London and only became a professional artist when he was twenty-six. He is perhaps most famous as an illustrator, particularly of children's books. In 1970 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The intimate interior depicted here is in fact that of a brothel. With a complex, layered use of line, Ardizzone creates a moving design of solid figures. The scene actually has a quite tender feel; the figures' eyes meet as the woman lowers her dress and the client puts on his shoes. Ardizzone displays the influences of Honoré Daumier's satirical realism and Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard's Intimiste exploration of interiors as subject matter.
