About MeWalter Crane was a prolific designer and it was in book illustration that his reputation lay. His illustrative work reflects the current artistic styles of his day, in particular the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Aberdeen Art Gallery holds preliminary ink and watercolour sketches for five of the illustrations for 'The Frog Prince', a children's picture book published in 1874. In this fairy tale, a young Princess was one day playing with a golden ball by the side of a fountain, when it falls into the spring and is lost. The frog offers to retrieve the ball if the Princess will allow the frog to live with her.
