About MeThis black/white photograph shows the crew of the Aberdeen registered fishing vessel Britannia. This is probably the vessel listed in the 1913 Shipping Register; built in Peterhead in 1893 and owned by John Craig of Aberdeen.

The baskets visible to the left suggest this was a great liner. As many as 36 long lines were used to catch halibut, turbot, skate and cod. A lot of time was spent working on deck and this is reflected in the crew's heavy clothing.

In the late 19th century, many local fishermen bought steam great liners rather than signing on as trawler crew. Some line boats alternated between lining and drifting or trawling, depending on the time of year, fish prices and availability.
