About Me'La Bomba' was painted after Phillip's third and final visit to Spain. Whilst there, Phillip copied several paintings by Diego Velasquez. His influence can be seen in the confident handling of the girl's striped silk dress and the man's thickly encrusted epaulettes, embroidered in gold and silver thread.

Phillip was impressed by the vivacity of the Spanish people which contrasted with the moral seriousness of the Victorian age.

In 'La Bomba', bright colour and diagonals express a sense of movement and spontaneity. Suffused with energy, the figures are full of life and immensely flamboyant.
