About MeDuring the early part of his career, Phillip worked in the tradition of Wilkie who had popularised Scottish genre painting. In 1851 Phillip made the first of three visits to Spain. These visits profoundly altered his style and earned him the nickname 'Spanish' Phillip.

This painting was commisioned by Robert Rowlinson in 1856, when Phillip and animal painter Richard Ansdell were setting out for Spain. The painting is a collaboration, Andsell having painted the animals and Phillip the figures. Rowlinson was a friend of both artists and the collabration may have been his idea.

More About Me
This painting is a collaboration between the animal painter Richard Ansdell and John "Spanish" Phillip, who painted the figures. Robert Rowlinson, who knew both artists, commissioned the painting.
