About MePars was elected member of the Royal Academy in 1770 and in the same year he travelled with his patron Lord Palmerston on a Grand Tour through the Alps. He settled down in Italy five years later, working on many views of Rome, the Campagna and Naples, until his death in 1782 as a result of a chill caught while sketching.Like many artists-travellers Pars frequently worked using watercolour, a more portable medium than oil and more suitable for sketching. Moreover, the atmospheric qualities of watercolour were particularly appreciated by landscape painters.
