About MeThis limestone trough or cist was excavated from an archaeological site on the south side of Castle Street. This cist came out of the ground in several pieces, but was conserved and is now back in one piece again.

You can see the tool marks on the long side where a chisel has been used to shape the stone.

This is a very unusual object to be found in a medieval urban context. Stone cists like this were used during the medieval period as coffins, but it is difficult to see how a stone coffin would have found itself, empty of contents, on this site.
