About MeGeorge Reid studied as a young man in the Netherlands, where he came under the influence of his Dutch contemporaries and most particularly Alexander Gerrit Mollinger.

This painting bears testament to the influence that the flat Dutch landscape had on Reid - here he deliberately emphasises the horizontality of the landscape around the Montrose basin - and also his admiration for the subdued palette and tonal treatment of the Dutch School.
