About MeThis distant evening view of Spynie Castle - the medieval residence of the Bishops of Moray - was painted in 1866, the same year that Reid studied painting in the Netherlands. In typically Dutch Style, the scene is dominated by a brooding overcast sky. The sombre lighting effects and subdued harmonies of grey, black, white and brown evoke a feeling of melancholy and loneliness.More About Me
Aberdeen-born George Reid spent time in Holland to learn his technique, and it’s clearly evident in this haunting, desolate yet strongly atmospheric picture.
