About MeThe sitter, James Crombie of Goval Bank, New Machar, was born on 13 January 1810, and baptized at Fintray on the 26th. He went to Marischal College when he was 11, and graduated M.A. at 15.

Around 1828, he took over the family weaving business, and brought it into profit. On 30 March 1837, he married Katherin Scott Forbes, the daughter and eldest child of Theodore Forbes and his Armenian wife, Eliza Kevork. Katherin had been born on 1 December 1812 in Bombay. (The 1881 census gives her birthplace as Egypt.) The wedding was at St Nicholas, Aberdeen. He died on 31 January 1878. Katherine Crombie lived on until 10 April 1893, dying at 16 Bon Accord Square, Aberdeen.

This portrait was painted around the time of Minna Wason, whose portrait John Singer Sargent painted the following year.
