About MeThese curious objects are not coins at all but imitations in base metal of the type of George III gold guinea which acquired the popular name 'spade guinea' because of the shape of the shield on the reverse. They are common stray finds in North-east Scotland and elsewhere.

Both obverse and reverse designs are copied from the genuine guinea but the legends and date are incorrect and often meaningless: sometimes slogans like 'in memory of the good old days' are used.

The commonest use of imitation guineas was as gaming counters but doubtless they were often passed off fraudulently as the real thing.
