About MeProbably as a result of the success of his royal marriage portrait of the marriage of Queen Victoria's oldest daughter, Princess Victoria, in 1860 John Phillip was awarded another prestigious commission, to paint a sitting in the House of Commons. This lively sketch is a study for the finished painting, which is in the Government Art Collection. The scene shows the then Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, with his hands in his pockets, speaking during the debates on Cobden's Commercial Treaty between England and France which took place in February 1860. Behind him, just visible in the gloom, Speaker Denison is in the Chair.
More About Me
