About MeHaving studied at Edinburgh College of Art, John Maxwell travelled in the late 1920s to Italy and Spain. He returned from there with an interest in primitive art which continued to inform his painting. A close associate of William Gillies, he travelled with the artist around Scotland, principally to Kirkcudbright and Ardnamurchan.

This watercolour was painted at St Monance in Fife. Maxwell was accompanied to Fife by Gillies who has described how in this work Maxwell made a feature of what was in reality an insignificant lantern.
