About MeDuthie's pneumothorax apparatus; named after R.J.Duthie, MD of Aberdeen. This apparatus was designed for 4 purposes: 1. injection of any quantity of air into the chest 2.aasy manipulation, 3.portability, 4.easy sterilisation. Quantity being measured in the usual way by displacing water from one bottle to the other bottle. when one is full the tap is turned in order to reverse the water to the other bottle. This can be done indefinitely and any quantity of filtered air can be injected It is especially useful in replacing an extensive pleural effusion. By means of a second tap the air can be directed into the pleural cavity, or the latter can be connected with the water manometer to ascertain the intrapleural pressure. as the bottles are only 500ccm in capacity the apparatus is therefore small and portable. alltaps are metal and the whole apparatus can be sterilized by boiling. The operator can control the rate of the injection of air and manipulate the manometer tap with one hand, the other being left to steady the pneumothorax needle in the chest. As the apparatus is automatically filled with air during each injection it is ready for use at the end of each refill and is therefore convenient for clinics where many injections are required.
