About MeGeorge Mackie was head of design at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen 1956 -1980. Began training at Dundee College which was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1939. After service as a bomber pilot and being awarded the DFC finished art training at Edinburgh.
He worked in a number of areas; typography, book design, illustration, printmaking as well as painting. He and Edward Bawden collaborated on illustrations for Historical Ballads of Denmark. His work for National Trust For Scotland, Penguin Books and Edinbugh University Press gained him recognition. As a painter he was drawn to the landscapes and shores of Scotland which were imbued with a 'rhythmic intent and sparing solidity.'
The work he produced at Aberdeen Harbour in the 1970's are classic works of their type both from an artistic and documentary standpoint as they depict the impact wrought by the advent of oil exploration in the North Sea on what was the major fishing port in the country.
