About MeThis is the rim of a salt-glazed plate or shallow bowl found on an archaeological excavation at the St Nicholas Triangle, Aberdeen. Products of this type were made in many potteries during the 18th and 19th century.

This technique involves introducing salt into the kiln in the final stages of the earthenware firing process. The salt vapourises in the atmosphere of the kiln and forms an even, clear, lustrous glaze on the surface of the vessels.

The glaze formed is hard with a pitted look. This technique has been used on pottery from at least the medieval period. German stonewares, produced since the 13th century, were treated in this way.
