About MeSir William Gillies came from humble origins in the small East Lothian market town of Haddington and became perhaps the most celebrated Scottish artist of the mid 20th century. From 1946 he was Head of Painting and Drawing at Edinburgh College of Art, the art school that he had attended as a student.

This watercolour of Dalbeattie in south west Scotland illustrates Gillies' lyrical and poetic feel for landscape. His compositions were carefully planned - the subject stripped to essentials, laying form bare with balanced tonal harmonies - yet his landscapes transcended these techniques in their emotional quality.
