About MeImage of the Scotia III in the harbour at Aberdeen. This was a diesel electric trawler built on the Clyde in 1971. It wasthe third fisheries research vessel to carry the name, and arrived in Aberdeen in 1972. It was one of the first vessels to be equipped with a hydrolic crane in order to tow plankton netting. It was also the first research ship attached to Torry that had women amongst its complement.
Scotia was used as a support vessel in the 'Cod War' of 1972 off Iceland. It was also active in fundamental research into ocean currents and temperature, as well as habitat for the fish stocks. In 1988 Scotia III was involved in researching the environmental impact of the Piper Alpha disaster.
It was retired and sold for conversion as a survey ship to an Italian concern in 1998.
