About MeJames Pittendrigh MacGillivray completed this bust of Douglas Strachan (1875-1950) in 1915, during a highly creative and prolific period. Strachan was born in Aberdeen and had decorated the new Trades Hall and the Music Hall in his hometown. He also worked on the decoration of the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh. He would devote the latter part of his career to the design of stained glass.
This simple yet powerful bust is far more smoothly modelled than other works he produced at this time. The work has a relaxed, slightly informal tone about it, as Strachan's head is slightly tilted to the right and the folds of his clothing fall quite gently and rhythmically.
