About MeThis is a plaster copy of the famous pulpit in Florence created by Benedetto da Maiano (1442-1497) who was commissioned by the wealthy banker Pietro Mellini to create a funeral monument in the form of a pulpit. The pulpit was constructed from marble between 1472 and 1476 and placed in the Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross), the principal Franciscan church in Florence. The carved reliefs on the pulpit represent scenes from the life of St Francis.

This copy was one of many plaster casts of famous statues acquired for the gallery when a new extension was opened in 1905. At that time the Art School adjoined the Art Gallery (in the building now occupied by the Robert Gordon University) and the casts were intended to inspire and inform both art students and the granite carvers of the city.
