About MeJohn Ballantyne studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Sir William Allan and Thomas Duncan. He was later appointed by Robert Scott Lauder as Headmaster at the Academy and together, they provided valuable training for a distinguished group of artists that included William Quiller Orchardson and John Pettie. Ballantyne moved to London in 1863 where he begab his series of artists' portraits.Faed's studio is depicted in tones and with thinly applied paint that recall the influence of Scott Lauder. Ballantyne includes exquisite still life details including a bird cage, a spinning wheel and some pieces of pottery, all of which appear in Faed's paintings. Of particular interest is the standard lamp with its large reflecting panel which enabled Faed to continue painting after dark.
