The coat of arms shows a blue shield containing the sun and three stars representing day and night. Above this is an open book representing the book of learning and a Roman lamp, the traditional symbol for nursing. Underneath is the motto "TRADIMUS LAMPADA", which means "we hand on the torch". Inscribed around the edge is "THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF NURSING OF THE UNITED KINGDOM" in a blue band.
The College was granted this coat of arms in 1946 and incorporated it into their badge design. This example is later and the wording around the edge reflects the College's new name, previously having been simply a college, then joining with the National Council of Nurses of the United Kingdom.
