About MeJohn Clerk started etching during the 1770's as an amateur artist initially inspired by Paul Sandby. (Sandby had been employed as artist on the board of ordinance survey of Scotland 1746-51.) Clerk's etchings show a quaint 'Flemish' quality which is found in the creation of a mysterious distance. He became a member of the society of Antiquaries of Scotland 1781 - an interest which is reflected in his constant recording of ancient buildings. However, despite this scientific interest his etchings evoke a deep romantic response to their subject matter. He was one of the few Scottish artists - despite his amateur status - who was looking at his native landcscape in terms of the picturesque style.
