About MeThis is an etching made from one of the five copper plates owned by the artist's daughter, Miss Isabella Dyce, who arranged to have them printed by Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) at the suggestion of Charles Aitken, Director of Tate Gallery, in 1914.It is an early work and is very much indebted to the contemporary prints of Andrew Geddes (1783-1844), whom Dyce was in contact with as early as 1823.
Given the date of this print it is possible that the sitter may be Dyce's nephew, William Lowry Frederick Dyce. If so, this depiction of him fishing must have subsequently been extremely poignant for the family, as Lowry was to drown accidentally in the River Don at the age of sixteen.
