About MeGeorge Jamesone is the first Scottish figure to emerge in the 17th century as an individual artistic personality, distinct from the craftsman-painter. He was apprenticed to John Anderson, a decorative painter in Edinburgh and enjoyed a considerable reputation in his lifetime.

In this self-portrait the artist is turned towards the viewer, confidently displaying a miniature, possibly of his wife. A palette can be seen in the lower right hand corner. The pose and dark setting reflect Dutch painting of this period.
