About MeSmartly turned out horses and carts on Albert Street (although the horse second from right did move at the critical moment giving us a very ghostly image) 1930s. Identification is difficult but from feint lettering on the side one of the carts these might have belonged to Kennerty Dairy of Rose Street and Culter. It's not clear why they have been drawn up for a photograph but what we can see from this that well into the 1930s horse drawn vehicles remained an important part of the city scene. This was especially true of the dairy business where horse-drawn carts continued to be used by some firms into the 1950s. The continued reliance upon horse-drawn carts meant there was still a place for the skilled cartwright and wheelwright. However, the rapid spread of motor vehicles made these firms redundant but some companies, such as J. & J. Ingram of Hutcheon Street, gradually moved from carts to motor body manufacture.
