About MeAustralian soldier, George Furner Langley (1891-1971), served in both the First and Second World Wars. After taking part in the Gallipoli Campaign, he was seconded to the Imperial Camel Corps in 1916, in order to raise and train the 1st Australian Company.

Subsequently, James McBey spent five days on reconnaissance with the Australian Camel Corps in the Sinai desert. This informal portrait, inscribed "To Colonel Langley from James McBey, 7 July 1917", was evidently a personal gift and not included among the works which McBey submitted to the War Office in London. In 2001 it was presented to Aberdeen Art Gallery by George Langley's daughter.
