About MeCattle being driven across George Street, at the junction with Hutcheon Street, circa 1955. This image makes Aberdeen look like a market town and this it was up until the 1980s. Not far from here was the city's Auction Mart at Kittybrewster. Every Friday many farmers and even more beasts appeared on the streets of the city. Being a market town meant that Aberdeen also supplied all kinds of additional services to the farming community not the least being a slaughterhouse. This, with associated hide and tallow dealers, was located just behind the Butcher's Arms pub (Alex. McBride being the publican), the name coming from its clientele. This bar, opened about 1901, replacing the Butcher's Tavern. Killing animals and processing hides was a bit of a smelly trade and many complaints were voiced about the slaughterhouse. In 1974 it was finally closed. Langstane Housing Association built flats on the site.George Washington Wilson
