About MeThe north end of Crown Street, looking towards Union Street, circa 1905. Prior to the construction of the granite buildings we see here the site was said to have been occupied by red tiled hovels. The photograph has been taken more or less from the spot where the General Post Office went up in 1907. The buildings to the left, just beyond the trees, was designed by George Coutts and date from 1899-1901. The architecture is said to be free style. To the right, on the east side of Crown Street, the Victorian photographer George Washington Wilson had his shop and studio. It was here that GWW's middle class clients sat in front of the photographer's wooden framed cameras waiting for their images to be caught on glass negatives.
